The Galeshewe Magistrate Court in Kimberly, this week ruled that the father charged with three counts of rape for sexually assaulting his daughter should remain in jail. The accused was denied bail on Wednesday.

The prosecutor reminded the court that due to the seriousness of the charges against the accused. The accused had also called the victim in this case to request that she withdraw the charges against him. The prosecutor argued that the accused may flee or threaten the victims and witnesses in the case.

“My Lord, in the interest of justice, we are opposing bail against the accused because the is proof that he made a call to the victim while incarcerated. And he tried to persuade her to withdraw the case. Another thing is that witnesses in this case are his biological children, and it would be easy for him to interfere with the witnesses. With that, my lord, the accused should not be given bail,” said the prosecutor.

The 47-year-old man was arrested for raping his daughter since in 2010. According to the National Prosecuting Authority, it was alleged that the daughter, who is now 21 years old, was raped from the time she was nine years old.

Outside the court community members carried placards calling for the suspect to be denied bail. The case has been postponed until October 19, 2022.
