A family from Khala in the Waterberg district in Limpopo have accused George Masebe Hospital in Mokopane of negligence and incompetence after one of their relatives was killed by a fellow mental health patient there.
According to the Sekgobela family, one of their relatives - Chabaku Alpheus Sekgobela, was allegedly strangled to death by a fellow mental health patient in the early hours of Sunday morning, May 22, 2022. Sekgobela was a teacher at Olifantsdrift School in Ga Seleka.
The family said they were shocked after they were notified of the death of the 37-year-old teacher, who was admitted less than two weeks prior, on May 10.
The aunt of the victim, Mapula Ramoroka, said she is disappointed at how the Department of Health in Limpopo is handling the case. She said no one from the Health Department visited the family to offer psychological support during this difficult time.
Ramoroka also said that the family wants an explanation from the hospital on the circumstances leading up to the “mysterious” of death of their loved one.
The provincial health spokesperson Neil Shikwambane told fray news that the process of investigation is still under way as to what led to the death. “We are unable to give any comment up until that process is concluded so that we comment from a point of view informed by the findings of the hospital”, Shikwambane said.
