A man accused of murdering his five-year-old nephew in Phalaborwa, east of Polokwane in Limpopo, has died after being attacked by the community. The 27-year-old, Kagiso Moyane, died in hospital from injuries he sustained when his community attacked him the same day he was accused of murdering his nephew, Kgohlelelo Selowa.
The mother of the little boy came back from work to discover her son's body in his bedroom. She called the police.
“Upon our arrival at the crime scene we found the body of Kgohlelelo with multiple stab wounds and next to him was a knife and a sharp object which we believe could have been used in this murder,” said Mojapelo.
Mojapelo said the motive behind the killing is still not clear. He said the suspect was attacked by community members and succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to hospital at around 22:00 on June 6, 2022
“We continue to call on community members to desist from taking the law in to their hands as this affects negatively police investigations,” said Mojapelo.
Mojapelo said there are no arrests made yet on the mob justice attack and police opened a case of murder.
Kgohlelelo’s life was cut short just a day after National Child Protection Week on June 5, 2022.
Provincial police commissioner, General Lieutenant Thembi Hadebe, has condemned this incident.
“I am saddened to learn about this senseless killing of the child, especially when we just concluded the National Child protection week.” She said children’s safety should always be a priority.
