A total of 568 374 new voters are now registered to vote in South Africa’s provincial and national elections scheduled to take place in few months from now. This was revealed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), following the first leg of voter registration weekend, held on the 18 and 19 November 2023.

Political Analyst, Teboho Tshepe, says the sudden interest from the youth is not surprising at all. ‘’The enthusiasm shown by the young people indicate that people on the ground are not happy with the status quo and want change.’’

He says the youth is despondent, the lack of jobs, tertiary education challenges, load shedding and the hype around the formation of new political parties has contributed to this interest. “Social media is also contributing to this interest, many political parties are using different platforms to communicate their message and young people consume this content”.

The voter’s roll currently has 26.8 million voters, from 26.3 million before the November voter registration weekend.
